The Whithorn Trust

Background to the organisation

When the Whithorn Trust was first set up in 1986 one of the chief aims was to ensure that the artefacts were on display in Whithorn in close proximity to the site as a driver for rural regeneration. However, the finds from excavations at Whithorn are of such importance that they could be displayed in any museum. In fact, the National Museum of Scotland has an exhibition devoted to Whithorn School crosses and also displays treasures from the graves of its bishops. Dumfries and Stranraer Museum also exhibit parts of the collection of Whithorn School crosses. The British Museum, London and Kelvingrove, Glasgow also holds artefacts originally from the Whithorn area. But it is the reinforced sense of place, with artefacts belonging to the site on its doorstep that also makes the museum in Whithorn significant.
